Running out of gas while driving is a situation that many of us have faced or will face at some point in our lives. It's an inconvenient and frustrating experience that can leave you stranded on the side of the road. However, thanks to modern roadside assistance services, getting stranded without gas no longer means being stuck for hours. In this guide, we will discuss what to do when you run out of gas, how to stay safe in such situations, and the benefits of using fuel delivery services.

1.Stay Calm and Safe

The first and most important step when you run out of gas is to stay calm and safe. Don't panic or make hasty decisions that could lead to accidents. Here's what you should do to ensure your safety:

  • Pull over to the side of the road: If your car starts sputtering and you realize you're running out of gas, safely navigate to the right side of the road, as far away from traffic as possible.

  • Turn on hazard lights: Turn on your hazard lights to signal to other drivers that you have a problem. This will make your vehicle more visible and reduce the risk of a collision.

  • Exit the vehicle safely: If you can safely exit your vehicle, do so and stand a safe distance away from the road and traffic. If you have passengers with you, ensure their safety as well.

2.Assess Your Location

Once you are safely parked, assess your location. Where are you on the road, and what is the nearest landmark or exit? This information will be useful when you contact a fuel delivery service or roadside assistance. Knowing your exact location will help them find you more quickly.

3.Call for Assistance

Now that you're safe and have assessed your location, it's time to call for assistance. There are a few options to consider:

  • Roadside Assistance: If you have a roadside assistance membership, call the number provided on your membership card or in your car's manual. They can dispatch a service vehicle to bring you fuel.

  • Fuel Delivery Services: Some companies specialize in fuel delivery services. They can bring the right type and amount of fuel to your location. This option is often quicker and more convenient than waiting for a tow truck.

  • Local Gas Stations: If you're near a gas station, you can call them to see if they offer a fuel delivery service or if they can provide information on local options.

4.Communicate Your Needs

When you call for assistance, be clear and concise about your location and the type of fuel you need. Make sure to communicate your situation clearly, and provide any necessary information to the service provider. If you are not sure about your vehicle's fuel type, it is often written inside the fuel door or mentioned in the owner's manual.

5.Stay Informed

While waiting for assistance, it's a good time to review your vehicle's fuel efficiency and consider how to avoid running out of gas in the future. Here are some tips to stay informed and prepared:

  • Know Your Vehicle: Familiarize yourself with your car's fuel efficiency, which is usually measured in miles per gallon (MPG). This knowledge can help you estimate how far you can go on a tank of gas and plan accordingly.

  • Keep an Eye on the Gauge: Regularly check your fuel gauge to monitor the level of fuel in your tank. Don't wait until it's on empty to refuel.

  • Plan Ahead: Before embarking on a long journey, plan your route and note the locations of gas stations along the way. Ensure you have enough fuel to reach the next station.

  • Carry an Emergency Kit: In your vehicle, keep an emergency kit that includes essentials such as water, a flashlight, a blanket, and non-perishable snacks in case you need to wait for assistance.

Benefits of Using Fuel Delivery Services

Fuel delivery services have become increasingly popular for drivers who run out of gas, and for good reason. Here are some of the benefits of using these services:

  • Convenience: Fuel delivery services are incredibly convenient, as they bring the fuel to you. There's no need to walk to a gas station with a container or wait for a tow truck.

  • Time-Saving: These services are often faster than waiting for a tow truck to arrive and then driving to a gas station. They can get you back on the road more quickly.

  • Accurate Fuel Delivery: Fuel delivery services can provide the precise amount of fuel your vehicle needs. This can save you money and ensure you don't overfill your tank.

  • Variety of Fuel Types: These services often carry different types of fuel, including regular gasoline, diesel, and even premium fuel, so they can accommodate various vehicle types.

  • Available 24/7: Many fuel delivery services operate 24/7, ensuring that you can get assistance at any time, day or night.

Running out of gas can be a frustrating experience, but with the right knowledge and a calm approach, you can handle the situation safely and efficiently. Whether you choose to rely on a fuel delivery service or your roadside assistance membership, being prepared and knowing what to do will make the experience less stressful. Remember to stay informed about your vehicle's fuel efficiency, plan ahead for long journeys, and keep essential safety items in your car. By taking these precautions, you can reduce the chances of running out of gas and ensure a smoother, more convenient experience if it does happen.

  1. Step 1: Put on your gloves and protective eyewear.

  1. Step 2: Gather jumper cables, towels, and the other vehicle used as a power source.

  1. Step 3: Put both cars in park and make sure both vehicles are off.

  3. Step 5: Grab the other red (positive) end and connect it to the red (positive) terminal on the vehicle that is the power source.

  4. Step 6: Grab the black (negative) end of the jumper cables and connect it to a solid, unpainted metal part of the vehicle that needs a jump. (strut mount stud or bolt on engine). Note: you can use the negative terminal as well, but it's best practice not to.

  5. Step 7: Grab the black (negative) end of the jumper cables and connect it to the negative terminal on the power source vehicle and turn the vehicle on.

  6. Step 8: After 2 minutes, get inside the vehicle that needs a jump and turn it on like normal. At this point it should start, and you should disconnect the jumper cables, starting with the negative terminal.

After following these steps, you should have two running vehicles. You'll want to make sure you leave the vehicle that needed a jump running for at least 20-30 minutes, so it has enough time to recharge the dead battery on its own. Otherwise, it could not start again after shutting it off.
